Let There Be Light

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

The world was dark, and then He spoke
And scattered all the gloom-filled black.
The shadows fled, the darkness broke
The still, cold night retreated back.

O God, my heart was blackest night,
My soul had sunk to deepest hell.
And then, a great and glorious Light!
Your Christ-child came—Emmanuel.

He called His own from Egypt’s land
And led them with a cloud by day.
When darkness fell across the sand
God’s gleaming fire made bright their way.

My Lord, Who led with flaming fire,
Guide all my steps to walk Your ways,
And let my soul anew aspire
To do Your will, and sing your praise.

God told His people, when they raised
A tabernacle for His name
To ever leave the lamps ablaze—
His presence praise with brilliant flame.

Dear Christ, true Light sent from above,
Forever may You dwell with me,
And may I know Your radiant love
Through time and all eternity.
